When I say "I shoot my own food" not many people take me seriously. Can you blame them?

Over the last 16 years of pigeon shooting and crop protection in the UK, I've learnt a lot about hunting and growing my own food, which has brought me much closer to my hunter gatherer roots, and given me a deeper understanding of food, nature and the science that goes hand in hand with it.

I have of course, made many mistakes along the way, and these mistakes - as well as my own personal tips and general experiences as someone who entered the Fieldsports world as an adult - are what I would like to share with you all, in the hopes it will make your journey a little easier and more enjoyable!

"Keep striving to be better... but don't put your happiness on hold..."

I had this conversation with someone recently. I was worried they were burning the candle at both ends, and reminded them of how the serenity of the countryside can help with clarity of mind and peace for the soul.

"Book a day off for deer stalking", I said. "If you feel like you need to be 'doing' something, do that. You'll enjoy yourself, you'll be helping the landowners, helping to manage wildlife and you'll be bringing sustainable, healthy meat home!"

Sometimes, I need to listen to my own advice - and this is what I've been doing the past few weeks. Many new opportunities have come my way (exciting news to be announced soon) and I'm so grateful for them; but I have to recognise which ones are going to serve me - and remember to give myself a pat on the back for getting out of my own way - no imposter syndrome to be found here!

Give yourself time, guilt-free, to do what you love - or do nothing. Either way, you will clear your mind of the clutter for amazing things to happen...

Pest fontrol helped me overcome my fear of the dark...

Not really. It's still there. But sometimes you have to sneak around in the dark to get the job done!

These cows watched on calmly the other night as they watched me (well, a dark shadow) getting rid of their pesky food stealing and disease spreading neighbours! FX air rifle, HikMicro Thunder thermal scope and spotter making the job quick and effective.

Funny, I used to want a pet rat as a kid. A clean one though. That I could teach tricks and stuff.

Anyway, time to leave the dairy farm for a few weeks for inspections to be completed and the cold weather to roll in, which will push the rats into the barns even more - I'll be ready and waiting 💪🏾💥

A wonderful weekend spent doing 2 things I love - deer stalking and feeding people!

Thanks to a last minute save from a couple of good friends, this weekend resulted in a woodland deer stalk, a successful test of the bog sticks as a new butchery tool and a happy table of diners - one of which being my best friend who has been vegan for years but loved her first taste of venison!

Oh and Rigby got the leftovers - everybody was happy!

Now time to get ready to head to the big smoke tomorrow for festive drinks part 1 🥂

Getting the job done - when you don't have time to dilly dally on a stalk, take the thermal.

Yesterday's woodland stalk was magical, and textbook. Yes, a thermal was used to help find the deer quicker (this was a very large estate that required deer to be managed in order to protect new trees and crops). But field craft was also used alongside the handheld spotter; both prior to and after the shot was taken.

I am excited to share my experience - and venison - with friends tomorrow! 🦌💥

A beautiful evening on the marsh ended empty handed but heart full....

The tide was an hour too late for the position I was in so nothing came over low enough for a shot. And as a newbie to 'foreshore' fowling, I wasn't yet comfortable heading to the creek that I could tell another club member was on, who had a great evening from the amount of shots I heard!

This was Rigby's first visit and he was obsessed, so wonderful to see him in an environment that he loves - even when he gets stuck and whines at me in the dark with the tide heading in, making me crawl around in the mud in a mad panic and ring the marsh warden!! The LED collar was no good let me tell you 😅

Rigby got home and had a warm shower with Dad, I got home and had a warm bath - both of us feeling very happy with our outing and a lot less muddy!

What a weekend!!

Despite storm Claudia trying to mess up our trip we had a blast with new friends ✨️

A visit to Thimbleby clay ground Saturday morning to give the new Winchester a bash, a quick hour on the flood plains on duck Saturday night, and finally arrived home to scope out a new rabbit permission this evening!

Teeny tiny baby cuddles, dog cuddles, intros to even more new Fieldsports friends and alllll the late night chats over red wine - oh and lots of banter inbetween of course 😉

Looking forward to seeing you guys again soon, thank you for a wonderful weekend with some bloody awesome humans! Now time to conk out in front of the fire 🔥

As National Game Week comes to an end I'm taking a look back at my own hunter gatherer and activities over the years.

From hunting to butchery and cooking, to foraging and growing my own vegetables; I'm so happy that I am now closer to my food and understanding the its background and the science than ever before.

I feel healthier, I feel proud to be having a positive impact on my countryside and wildlife, and I feel content that I am feeding my family as nature intended.

Winter is coming....

No more short sleeves for me! But still lots of beautiful skies to look forward to over the coming months. Whether they're grey or clear, I love getting all dressed up and out in the countryside looking for my next meal.

I have a busy few weekends ahead with some fun hunting trips and visits to see friends, but in the meantime I'll keep plodding happily along on pest control duties 🫡
