My Hunting Life... In A Blog.

When I say "I shoot my own food" not many people take me seriously. Can you blame them?

Over the last 15 years of pigeon shooting and crop protection in the UK, I've learnt a lot about hunting and growing my own food, which has brought me much closer to my hunter gatherer roots, and given me a deeper understanding of food, nature and the science that goes hand in hand with it.

I have of course, made many mistakes along the way, and these mistakes - as well as my own personal tips - are what I'm ready to share with you all.

Throwback to Nathan's birthday weekend ❤️

Thank you Ian, Fiona and Gareth for helping me to make this a special trip for a man who has supported me so much the past couple of years I just can't thank him enough...

2 roe, 2 muntjac, more Hik Micro gear than you could shake a stick at, lots of huffing and puffing from me and Ian carrying the carcass sacks and lots of laughter, dog cuddles, wine, birthday cake - and of course venison!

And capping it all off at the Le Strange estate with a beautiful BBQ on the second night was literally the icing on the cake.

What a wonderful weekend with amazing friends, we couldn't have asked for better!

Same time next week yeah....? 😂

Sometimes, you have to improvise... if the rabbits won't come to you, then go to them - just don't scare them off!

Whilst out a couple of weeks ago I got bored of waiting for pigeons to land in a position where I could shoot them - they were teasing me from the branches above my head, and on top of the hedgerows. So, since I had my .22 with me, I decided to take a walk after spotting a couple of rabbits through the Hik Condor thermal imager.

I lay in position for 20 minutes, then thought, "surely they'd be out by now?" I kneeled upright to have a peek. They were out alright. In the next tram line along. But they soon dispersed deep into the OSR as soon as I moved, obviously 🤦🏾‍♀️

I'm not always hunting. Sometimes I'm climbing mountains...

Ok this wasn't a mountain, it was a very big hill in the Peak District. On my birthday a couple weeks ago I took myself off to climb for a couple hours, and stuff my face with cake at the top. It followed a couple of tough weeks and it was a great way to clear my mind - and exercise! My high blood pressure diagnosis can p**s off 😂

I then took myself off to @fiocchiuk to collect some birthday cartridges and a lovely card - thank you Fiocchi family 🥰 it was a lovely end to a rough week.

Now I'm just waiting for the rain for the recent drillings to start growing, so I can get out on pigeons again in a few weeks 🙏🏾💥

Remember - not all that glitters is gold, and not all of us are always golden. Sometimes, we're going through our own s**t too. Make sure you talk about it, a problem shared is ALWAYS a problem halved 💪🏾 🥰

Successful muntjac stalk, but lessons were learned...

This was my first female muntjac, and my first pregnant deer. Great for managing the population, not so great to deal with 🤢😅

I realised how stressed I had been and had almost forgotten how much of a reset being out in the countryside is for me. This stalk lasted 3 hours, I saw 2 roe, and 3 other muntjac (and a zillion hares!) before taking her at last light, at around 80 yards.

And to see a long eared owl in the wild was a first for me too, what a treat! 😍 (in my stories)

Now time to get home so the hunter can become the butcher - and the chef!

New month, new toys 🤩

After taking out other people as a hunting guide, only to realise their equipment was better than mine, I knew it was time to sort it out!

I kinda want it to rain - just so I can show you how good this Condor thermal imager is - but there's plenty of time for that...

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to stalking later this month with the new equipment and sharing the imagery and experiences with you - but not the food, that's mine - and Rigby's!

Should probably read the instructions first though 😂

This one time, on muntjac... when I remembered to take enough ammo but forgot to put one in the chamber - you could say I was being overly safety conscious 😂

Looking forward to getting out for more venison next month and maybe a nice roe head if I'm lucky - it's April 1st sooooon!! 🤩

A very interesting weekend...!

Attending this show was a first for the Fiocchi team and for me, it was wonderful to see so many 'outdoorsy' people coming over to have a go on the @gaimitg simulator and discussing clay pigeons with us!

From Boy Scouts to retired RAF and everything in between, every conversation was a chance to educate about fieldsports - and educate we did!

My only request for next year would be for Ray Mears to be running a workshop not talking on stage where I CAN'T REACH HIM 😂

It was wonderful to see old friends and other fieldsports brands there too and I'm already looking forward to next year 🙌🏾

A 3-1 ratio makes me happy even though it's not as good as recent weeks, it's due to me pushing myself further, taking further and faster birds, and having the confidence in the cartridge to do so. It also resulted in a higher bird count than usual 💪🏾

As for the second image; nothing makes me happier than seeing the food in the crop of a pigeon, reminding myself just how much they can destroy - even better if that food is the very crop I've been protecting 💥
